Hadrian's Wall between Walltown Quarry East and West (Greenhead)
This section of Hadrian's Wall survives as an earthwork and as a standing feature along the crest of Walltown Crags. One section was consolidated and preserved in 1960 and, in places, the Wall now stands over 2m high. When the conservation work was done in 1960 some inscribed stones were found that had fallen from the south face of the Wall. The position of one turret, known as Turret 45a, lies exposed along this part of the Wall. The route of the Military Way Roman road, which ran between the Wall and the vallum, can be seen as a causeway or terrace to the south. This is a Scheduled Monument and the upstanding remains are a Grade I Listed Building.
