Sites to Visit

Not all of the archaeological and historical buildings and monuments on the Keys to the Past website are open to the public. However, many are open to visitors. In this section we list some of these sites – some are run by national bodies, such as English Heritage and the National Trust, others are privately owned. We hope this cross-section of fascinating sites will encourage you to further explore the archaeology and history of the northeast.

We have also encouraged people to write about their favourite sites. These are not always the most spectacular or ancient places in the area, but they mean something special to those who chose them.
