Centurial stones (Greenhead)
[NY 672662] Three Roman building stones found during conservation by M.O.W. and stored by them. a) Found in 1960 fallen on the north side of Hadrian's Wall 105 yards west of turret 45a. Inscription reads - c VLPl Vo LVSllNl b) Found in 1959 fallen on the south side 160 yards west of turret 45a. Inscription reads - c CALEDON SECVNDI. c) Found in 1960 in the same sector. Inscription reads COH.lll MAXIMI. (1)
Approximate find-spots of (a) at NY 67306630, and (b and c) at NY 67256628 were confirmed by M.O.W. personnel at Housesteads, where the stones are stored. (2)
These stones were deposited by MPBW in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle upon Tyne in, or shortly before 1969. (3)
Findspots depicted on RCHME 1:2500 overlay from measurements in Authority 1. (4a)
General association with HER 30888 (Walltown Crags). (4)
