Turret 45a (Walltown Crags East) (Greenhead)
[NY 6740 6635] Turret [G.S.] Excavated AD 1883. (1)
Turret 45a was built prior to the Wall. It lies about 100 yards short of the normal distance, and may be a signal-tower independent of the system. Excavation in March 1959, and consolidation by M.O.W, followed two previous examinations in 1912 and 1883. (2)(3)(4)

The turret walls are well preserved and attain an average height of 1m. Published Survey (25!) correct. (6)
Two centurial stones found in 1959 25ft and 155ft respectively west of Turret 45a (7) have been deposited by MPBW in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle upon Tyne. (8)
Excavation in 1959 showed that the structure was in fact Hadrianic and not Trajanic as has been suggested. Pottery found suggests an occupation coming to an end in the 2nd century. (9)
