Former coal workings (Cartington)

Adjacent to roadway across moor and stretching from edge of forest south-west to trackway into Debdon Whitfield farm are various earthworks probably indicative of former coal mining in the area. These include at least two grassed over shaft sites evident as circular earthwork as well as several low amorphous turf-covered mounds which are probably associated spoil heaps. (1)
