Medieval boundary stone on Callaly Moor.
Medieval boundary stone on Callaly Moor.
Free-standing stone slate located on corner of Old Thrunton Woods and adjacent to new plantations on Callaly Moor. Cross stands 1.5m high, is c.0.4m broad x 0.2m thick. It has raised splayed arm cross similar to that on NU 00 NE 14, on west face. East face has a much ruder straight-arm cross, the arms of which have been roughly pecked out, leaving a central raised terminal. May mark extent of lands held by Brinkburn Priory at Thrunton. (1)

Form of cross suggests 12th/13th century date. (2)

NU 0632 0882. Medieval boundary stone 420m SSE of Callaly Crag. Scheduled RSM No 20987. A decorated boundary stone of medieval date situated on the corner of Old Thrunton Woods; it is one of a group of four in the area (see also NU 00 NE 14, 16 and 17). The stone, composed of local grey/brown limestone, is 0.2m thick and measures 1.5m high by 0.4m across. On the W face there is a carving of a splayed armed cross and on the E face a deeply incised crude straight armed cross. The form of both crosses indicates that they date to the 11th or 12th centuries AD. This stone, along with the three others, is thought to mark the limits of an area of land at Thrunton which was donated to Brinkburn Priory in the mid 13th century. (3)
