Mount Pleasant unenclosed settlement (Cartington)
Hut circles at NU 1103 0253. (1)
NU 110 025. On a heather and bracken covered south east facing slope are the remains of a settlement of four hut circles ('A' to 'D') and a contemporary field system, all most likely Iron Age.
'A' NU 1085 0248. The remains of a circular enclosure about 14.5m in diameter, consisting of a wall about 1.5m wide, now much spread. There are two gaps in the wall, one in the west being most likely modern, and one in the south east which is probably the original entrance.
'B' NU 1093 0260. The remains of a well preserved hut circle, 5.5m in diameter, set into the slope, formed by a wall about 1.2m wide consisting of large stone boulders. The entrance is in the south west. The interior is overgrown with heather and has a substantial build up of peat.
'C' NU 1103 0256. An oval shaped hut measuring 10m north west-south east by 8m, between the centres of a well preserved turf covered stone wall about 1.2m wide. The entrance is not evident but could possibly have been in the north west.
'D' NU 1116 0277. Situated outside the north east edge of the field system and set on a platform levelled into the hillside a hut measuring about 6m in diameter between the centres of a well defined heather covered stone wall. The entrance is in the south west.
The field system consists of occasional field walls, a few ill-defined lynchets and many well-defined round and linear stone clearance heaps. Some of the heaps about 6.0m in diameter have had the interiors robbed, giving the impression of small huts.
At NU 10950264 a heath fire has exposed two conjoined fields measuring 72m south west-north east by 36m and 42m south west-north east by 36m, marked by low rickles of boulders and stone lynchets. The field system is crossed by a possible contemporary sunken way extending from immediately outside the entrance of the hut 'B' in a south east direction for a distance of approximately 60m. The majority of the area is covered with bracken which may have obscured further huts and fields. Huts surveyed at 1:10,000. Field system delineated on Record Sheet. (2)
NU 110025: An extensive cairn field incorporating three much larger cairns, presumably sepulchral, and an unenclosed stone round house, and rudimentary field plots were surveyed at Mount Pleasant in 1979. The enclosure has been mutilated by robbing and the interior has been obscured by later field clearance, making exact interpretation difficult but this is most certainly the remains of a hut. Surveyed at 1:1250. (3)
