Little Mill Hill millstone quarry (Cartington)
About 150 yards from the camp in a direction west by north 3 degrees north, is a rock with incised markings. The rock is about 40 yards from the cliff and about 20 yards from a small stream which falls down the precipice on the east side of it.
The markings consist of two adjacent, nearly circular cuttings, the diameter of the westerly one being about 2ft 10ins by 2ft 4ins, the more easterly 2ft 6ins by 2ft, the circular incision is about 10ins wide and 2ins deep. (1)
NU 07880055. A large boulder of fine sandstone, sited as described by authority 1, has a flat surface, upon which are inscibed two adjacent nearly circular cuttings, of an average diameter of 0.8m. The incisions are 0.1m square in cross section and have been carefully cut, and are well preserved. The easternmost circle is incomplete as it runs to the edge of the rock. (2)
The photograph suggests abandoned work on cutting out millstones rather than sculpture, and the very deep incisions support this view. (3)
Agreed, condition unchanged. (4)
NU 078006. Millstone quarry. Stones measure 0.7-0.8m in diameter. Earliest date about 1769. (5)
