Group of round cairns east of Hob's Nick (Whittingham and Callaly)
[NU 05990914 and NU 05950912] Tumuli. [NU 06030927] Tumulus. (1)
A group of three (or possibly four) cairns:-
'A' NU 06030927. Situated just within a plantation on the edge of a fairly steep cliff this cairn is somewhat isolated from the others. It is 13m in diameter and 1.4m high (maximum), and has two small hollows on its eastern surface. There is no trace of a ditch or retaining circle.
'B' NU 05990914. Situated in open moorland this cairn is 12m in diameter and 1.5m maximum height, and has a large hollow at its centre. No traces of a ditch or retaining circle remain.
'C' NU 05950912. A cairn 8m in diameter and 1.7m high with no trace of a ditch or retaining circle.
'D' NU 05960911. A scatter of stones forming a platform in places appears to be the remains of another cairn. Roughly oval in shape, its axes measure 9m and 2.5m. Material which apparently came from this cairn, including one large slab of stone have been piled against the south-east side of the cairn 'C'. (2)
'A' and 'B' are good examples of round cairns, but 'C' and 'D', situated on the crest of a south facing rocky scarp, must be considered doubtful. 'C', although generally as described, contains
much outcrop, while 'D' appears to be no more than an assemblage of stones. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (3)
A group of five cairns ('A' to 'E') with two probable others 'F' and 'G'. 'C' to 'G' are set on the south edge of a spur but all are heavily obscured by heather making precise measurements difficult.
'A' - NU 06030926. The most northerly set on the edge of Callaly Crag is 12m in diameter and 1.4m high. It is heavily covered by heather and pine trees. The interior has been mutilated by two small excavation hollows. There is no trace of a kerb.
'B' - NU 06000914. Built on a rocky outcrop and obscured by heather, it measures 12m in diameter and 1.6m high, with remains of a kerb of rough walling still visible in parts three courses high. Stones from the interior have been dumped in the south-east of the cairn.
'C' - NU 05960910. Is 8m in diameter and 0.8m maximum height.
'D' - NU 05980910. Is 9m in diameter and 0.5m high with a conifer tree growing from the interior. Part of the east side has been mutilated by robbing.
'E' - NU 05970910. Is 4.5m in diameter and 0.3m high with a kerb formed of contiguous boulders.
'F' - NU 05960912 and 'G' - NU 05950912. Too heavily obscured by heather for a positive identification but due to their position and heavy stone content on a rocky outcrop are most probably two more small cairns.
'A' and 'B' surveyed at 1:10,000 on MSD. 'B', 'C', 'D' and 'E' surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. (4)
NU 0596 0910. Group of round cairns 40m E of Hob's Nick. Scheduled RSM No 20996. There are at least five cairns in a line orientated SE-NW. The central, most visible, cairn is 8m in diameter and 0.8m high; to the E of it a second cairn is 9m in diameter and 0.5m high. Between these cairns there is a small cairn 4.5m in diameter and 0.3m high. This last cairn has a peripheral stone kerb formed of large boulders. Immediately to the W of the central cairn there are a further two cairns, heavily obscured by heather; these are both 8m in diameter and 0.8m high. (5)
NU 0600 0914. Round cairn 260m SSW of Macartney's Cave. Scheduled RSM No 20985. The cairn is 12m in diameter and 1.6m high with traces of a stone kerb around the perimeter. A small hollow in its centre is the result of partial 19th century excavation; stones from it have
been moved to the SE side of the cairn. (6)
NU 0603 0925. Round cairn 140m SSW of Macartney's Cave. Scheduled RSM No 20984. The cairn is 16m in diameter and 1.4m high. The remains of two small hollows are visible on its surface, the result of partial 19th century excavation. (7)
