Blackhill Colliery was a mid-20th century coal mine. It operated from 1942 to 1959 following the closure of Scremerston Colliery. The shaft was 240 feet deep and the mine ran with the minimum of mechanisation, winning coal from shaft faces of 30 and 60 yards of low quality coal 2ft 3ins thick. It is said that the practice of filling on to the bottom belt started here. There were difficult working conditions here, due to a severe water problem and many faults, but despite this the colliery produced 68,000 tons coal/year with 210 men. The colliery had two owners before nationalisation: John Watson and Co of Wisham, and Yound Ltd.
