Scremerston Colliery (Ancroft)

NU 0100 4847 Scremerston Colliery. (1)

The engine house and water tower are Grade II listed buildings. They were built in 1840 for the Commissioners of Greenwich Hospital. (2)

Additional references. (3-4)

The old Scremerston pit heap, situated a few yards from the A1, was planted in 1886. It is cited as the oldest reclaimed pit heap in the world. (5)

The claim (Authority 5) for the pit heap as the oldest in the world is doubtful. (6)

Scremerston Colliery was operated between 1840 and 1878 and under a series of names as Greenwich Colliery, Scremerston Colliery, Scremerston Old Colliery, the Jack Tar Pit and Sink Pit. (7)

A post medieval colliery is visible as earthworks on air photographs. Evidence of the colliery is located at NU 0030 4990, NU 0085 4950 and NU 0108 4846. The features appear to have been levelled on the latest 1989 Ordnance Survey vertical photography. (8a)
