Local History
Togston (Northumberland)
Togston is a small coastal parish in mid-Northumberland and despite its small size there is a range of archaeological and historic remains.
Although there are prehistoric sites known in neighbouring parishes, none have been found in Togston. The earliest remains belong to the medieval period when there may have been a village at Togston and Togston Tower once stood to defend and protect the inhabitants. Later, in the 16th century, a defensive farmhouse, or bastle was built here and when more peaceful times came it was remodelled, becoming Togston Hall.
The area changed more in post-medieval times as developments in industry and farming were felt. A possible windmill stood at Hadston Mill, a dovecote at North Togston and Togston Colliery. Some of the wealth from these ventures was spent on building country houses such as Togston Hall. A reminder of modern conflicts is a searchlight position at Hadston Carrs.
