Turret 18b (Wallhouses West) (Matfen)

The old toll-house at Wallhouses, now demolished, covered the greater part of the turret, which was examined in 1931, and partly excavated in March 1959. (2)(3)
No visible remains. The site is covered by the grass verge of a modern road. (4)

Partly excavated in 1959 by Durham Univ. Excavn. Comm. Excavation suggested that, as is suspected of the other turrets E of the N Tyne, it went out of use by the end of the 2nd century. (6a)
There is no surface trace of the turret; the excavated site at NZ 0384 6848 is below the modern road and verge. (6b)
