Whittonstall Hall Farm Roman fort (Shotley Low Quarter)
A series of ditches were discovered by aerial photography in the 1980s. They have been interpreted as cropmarks of a suspected Roman fort. Three of its corners are visible and some stone features have been seen on the ground. However, trial trenching and a geophysical survey in 2009 failed to find any evidence of the fort and the remains seem to be associated with former linear colliery workings.
