Chapel Of St Philip And St James (Shotley Low Quarter)
A chapel to St Philip and St James is mentioned here in 1289. It was pulled down in 1830 and the present church erected on the site. An Early English corbel is all that remains of the chapel. (1)
[NZ 0714 5717] No trace of the chapel exists. The corbel is preserved just inside the south door. (2)
Whittonstall Church. Previous building recalled as being very small and very dilapidated, with an arch in the west wall and ruins further westward, no belfry and three small windows in the east end.
Likely that Whittonstall Chapel was originally built early in the 13th century while the manor
[NZ 05 NE 1] was in the possession of the Baliols. It may have been a copy of St Peter's, Bywell. In 1578 Whittonstall was recorded as a chapel. (3)
Church includes as war memorials:
* a brass plaque for World War 1 inscribed "WW1 PLAQUE: IN GRATEFUL AND HONOURED REMEMBRANCE/ OF/ THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ (NAMES)"
* a brass plaque for World War 2 inscribed "AND OF ONE WHO GAVE HIS LIFE/ IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR./ (NAME)". (4)(5)
