Church of St Andrew (Shotley Low Quarter)

The endowment of Blanchland Abbey in 1165 included the chapel of Shotley. Of the structure at that time or of a building erected soon afterwards, there remains a single capital, now preserved at Shotley Hall. Mentioned in 1417 the chapel was granted, in 1549, to Sir Thomas Gragrave of North Emsall, Yorkshire. In 1608 the church was 'out of repair' and in 1892, was rebuilt on the old lines as a chapel of ease. (2)(3)
The church is still in periodic use. At NZ 0453355190 on the east side of the south porch, is the socket stone of a churchyard cross. (4)
