The Crown (Elsdon)
(NY93709326 - sited from HHR Map) Grade II* 'The Crown' 1729. (Formerly an inn). Five windows, two storeys, plain stone building, fine doorpiece with cornice on well-carved consoles. (1)
The Crown. Grade II listed building. Farmhouse, formerly an inn. 1729, probably with an earlier core. Frieze inscribed JOHN GALION AD 1729 in second bay. (2)
Built of random rubble, including large old squared stone; roughcast; graduated Lakeland slate roof; brick chimneys. Two storeys, five bays. The doorway is in the second bay. It has a fine surround with an architrave and the frieze inscribed JOHN GALION AD 1729, above that a cornice on stone brackets. The windows are irregularly placed and there is a blocked door, all of which makes the original plan of the house very difficult to read. Continuous outshut and catslide roof to rear. Inside there are rough old early-18th century timbers and typically-early 18th century two- and three-panelled doors. (3)
