Ravens Cleugh defended settlement (Elsdon)

Ravenscleugh. Site of an earthwork. Site unknown. (Listed under native sites). (1)

Ravenscleugh. Type C. (Rectangular enclosures, usually associated with Roman occupation) (No other record. Not located). (2)

A perambulation of the area around Ravenscleugh farmstead NY 933913 revealed no traces of an earthwork. There is no local knowledge of any earthwork in the vicinity. (3)

Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1946). (4)

A small defended settlement was located by aerial reconnaissance in 1992, south east of the farm of Ravenscleugh, at c.NY 935908. The site was known by Hogg but not its location. (5)

A roughly circular enclosure is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:10,000 map and is also visible on aerial photographs. It is not clear whether this is the same enclosure identified by Authority 5. (6)(7)
