Coal Workings (Hepple)
More than 40 crop pits and waste heaps at Carrick. A random sample of ten pits were measured, the average results were: overall diameter of pit and spoil heap 14.23m; diameter of pit 5.5m; maximum height of spoil heap 1.22m; depth of pit 1.69m. Known dates c.1740 and 1804. (1)
Extensive coal workings; about 20 bell-pits are very clearly visible on lidar imagery extending over an area of about 500m north-south by 300m east-west. They appear to have been dug through narrow ridge and furrow. DTM lidar suggests a few further examples may survive within the adjacent plantation. The Ordnance Survey 2nd edition map shows just three 'Old Coal Pits', suggesting that the complex was perhaps already long disused by this time. (2)
