Sweethope Crags unenclosed settlement and field system (Bavington)

NY 963813: A settlement area consisting of a small field system and two badly robbed unenclosed round houses, at NY 96168121 and NY 96238124, were found on Sweethope Crags. A probable robbed cairn, 11m in diameter, at NY 96368122 was also found along with a recent oval enclosure at NY 96158136. Surveyed at 1:1250. (1)

Three or four superimposed field systems lie on the slope above Sweethope Crags. Remains of two unenclosed Bronze Age round houses; overlain by parallel stony banks associated with the RB homestead (NY 98 SE 1); and rigg ploughing which is probably medieval. (2)

NY 963813. Sweethope Crags possible unenclosed settlement. (3)

The tail slope of Sweethope Crags is criss-crossed with field walls of several different periods - including Bronze Age(?) and Roman(?). Extends southwards beyond Quarry House site. (4)

Sweethope Crags (NY 962813), possible field system associated with native settlement of Roman period. Photographed from the air in 1981. (5)(6)

Two areas of cord rig identified at c.NY 96258127 and c.100m to the south. The rig is roughly aligned east-west and measures 1.4m between furrows. The northern block is bound on the west side by a bank and appears to overlie a less substantial bank. The southern block is bound on the north side by a bank. (7)
