Wolf Crag farmhouse (Kirkwhelpington)

NY 97708809. Steadings of buildings and associated crofts. Dressed stones in walls of nearby sheep stells. Probably the remains of a small farm. No trace of antiquity. (1)

Substantial remains of a stone building and foundations of a separate enclosed building, lie below Wolf Crag. Earth and stone walls run from the building to the ENE and SSE and the foundations of further buildings lie to the south east. The remains are those of Wolf Crag Farmhouse, built after the enclosure of Whelpington Common in 1717. Kirkwhelpington Parish Register shows the farm was occupied between 1729-78 at least, but Hodgson records it was in ruins by 1827. (2)

An enclosure with small cells attached to it is depicted on the first edition 6-inch Ordnance Survey map. Three unroofed buildings are depicted on the second edition 6-inch and current 1:25,000 map, (3)
