Neolithic cup marked stone (Kirkwhelpington)
Between 4000 and 6000 years ago, during what archaeologists call the Neolithic period, people carved 11 cup marks into this stone. The stone lies in a cairnfield, which was probably created in the Bronze Age. Archaeologists think the cup marked stones were created either as part of a religious ritual, or perhaps to mark boundaries or routes through the landscape.
