Deserted medieval village at Catcherside (Kirkwhelpington)
NY 992877 Deserted medieval village at Catcherside. (1)
No visible trace of a deserted medieval village in the vicinity. Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1948). The reference appears to be to the name only. (2)
The village was part of the Barony of Prudhoe; held by the Fenwick family on the 13th century and later by various owners of Wallington. Hodgson records that the 'Scotch Street' ran through the village - probably a drovers' road - and that it had a mill and an inn. It is marked on Saxton's map of 1576. No earthworks are visible and the village may have been dispersed rather than nucleated. (3)
