Civilian settlement at Chesters (Humshaugh)
Outside Chesters Roman fort was a large civilian settlement, or vicus. It lies on the south side of the fort on level ground next to the River North Tyne. There is little to see on the ground, but aerial photographs show buildings and roads. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
