Groat Haugh sub-oval enclosure (Norham)

NT 891453. Groat Haugh. Enclosures, cropmark. (1)

Sub-oval enclosure on terrace of River Tweed. Defined by a narrow ditch, with two broad entrances. The south east entrance has two pronounced inturns. Possible pits in the interior. Diameter less than 100m. Orientated c.north-west/south-east. Cannot be ruled out as henge-related. (2)

The enclosure has opposed entrances aligned north west/south east. The ditches at the south east are inturned - a linear feature/ditch? There are two small ditched penannular features close by the west side of the main enclosure. (3)

Visible on a series of aerial photographs. (4)

General association with HER 924 (Roman temporary camp), HER 34411 (penannular cropmark), HER 34412 (circular enclosure, two pit alignments, several pits, and sections of ditch). (5)

Surveyed as part of RCHME Roman Camps in England Project, 1988. 1:2500 transcription shows a complex of cropmarks to the E of Norham Roman Camp (NT 84 NE 6). These include ring ditches, unenclosed roundhouses of prehistoric type and, most prominently, an unusual circular ditched structure with opposed entrances, the SE one markedly inturned (centred to NT 8920 4536). Full information is included in the NMR Archive. (5a)
