Dovecote Hill settlement (Bavington)
(NY 97477818) Earthwork. (1)
Found during field investigation. An oval earthwork containing the remains of a rectangular building in its north west quadrant. The character of the whole is non-defensive. (2)
Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
Condition unchanged. The 'building' appears to be coeval with the enclosure and the whole is probably no more than the remains of a medieval farm or homestead. (4)
Enclosure looks more like an Iron Age fort with an annexe, or else a Romano-British type ditched settlement. A radial pattern of field walls and a trackway are clearly pre-broad rigg. The hill has been ploughed but with little apparent damage to the field system. Further walls extend southwards towards NY 978777. (5)
Possible cord rig site at NY 976778. (6)
Air photographs taken in 2005 show that the enclosure is surrounded and respected by ridge and furrow cultivation. (7a-b)
