Prehistoric Burial (Chollerton)

(NY 9776) A cist, 2ft 4ins long and 1ft 3ins wide, containing a food vessel, was discovered in June 1884 during the construction of the Hallington Reservoir East, 'whilst excavating in an upper drift at the south east corner of the works'. In 1886, a second cist was found, together with 'three or four holes paved with stones'. No grave goods were associated with these latter discoveries. All these finds lay at a depth of two feet, whilst throughout the section of the hill, layers of charcoal and ashes occur at intervals. Both cists were later destroyed. (1)

A slight rise at NY 97487628 which has been partially cut by the construction of the reservoir, answers the description above. There are no signs of barrows on it. The food vessel is in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle. (No accession number). (2)

West Hallington, bipartite vase, with shoulder groove found at Colwell[?] in a cist. Stands 127mm high, 143mm rim diameter, 77mm base diameter. In Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle (1886.21). (3)
