Throckrington shrunken village (Bavington)
(NY95777902) Deserted Medieval Village of Thockrington (site of) (NY95707886, NY95937890) Earthworks (Twice). (1)
The hamlet of Thockrington now consists of one farmhouse with its buildings, two cottages and three outlying homesteads. North of the farmhouse there have been several enclosures (now marked by grass-grown mounds) still known as the 'night folds', in which it is said the cattle continued to be folded every night up to the middle of the 18th century. (2)
Listed as a deserted medieval village. (3)
Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
The remains are typical of population shrinkage. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (5)
The manor of Thockrington was part of the lordship of Prudhoe, appropriated to the archbishopric of York in 1226. The Lay subsidy of 1296 recorded 18 taxpayers; thirty people were listed in the Poll Tax of 1377. An open-field system of farming is indicated by grants of c.1333-4.
The village survived, somewhat shrunken, beyond the Middle Ages. Eleven houses were listed in the 1666 Hearth Tax. A commission was set up in 1691 concerning 16 farms owned by John Shaftoe. The township contained 14 tenants in 1716 and was divided into three parts. In 1848 only four farms remained, and only one steading was located in the village. Major depopulation seems to have occurred shortly before that date. The settlement presently contains a farmstead and two cottages.
The church contains 12th century portions (NY 97 NE 1); a bastle was recorded there by the County History (NY 97 NE 9). A group of house platforms and enclosures is visible on the edge of the whin outcrop north of the church and farm buildings. A row of about six crofts lies in a field on the north side of the road where the present cottages are situated - probably indicating tenements abandoned before the mid-18th century. Ridge and furrow defines the south and east sides of the settlement. Complex village plan. (6)
