Colt Crag Reservoir ( Little Swinburn Reservoir) (Chollerton; Bavington)

The reservoir was built by Bateman and Hill in 1884. It is part of a larger impounding scheme built in the second half of the 19th century for the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company. Although work started in 1863 a series of problems meant that it did not come into service until 1884. Modifications made since that date have also encountered problems, but despite this it still remains in use. (1-2)

NY 94017 78086. The valve tower and its components date to the late 19th-century and include original mechanical components, including cast valve assemblies, geared cast iron headstock, and frame, which are thought to be contemporary with its construction. The headstock mechanical components were built by Glenfield and Co Ltd of Kilmarnock, sometime between 1884 and 1889. The cast draw-off valves the headstock operates are known to be original to the reservoir construction and in situ in the valve tower shaft below. (3)
