The Shambles (Hexham)

The Shambles, Hexham. Scheduled Ancient Monument Northum 279. Erected in 1766 by Sir Walter Blackett. Comprise a colonnade of nine bays lengthwise and three bays broad. The columns are of simplified Doric style with pronounced entasis, except for the eight columns on the south side, which are square and made of wood. There is a semi-pyramidal roof. (1)

The Shambles is a simple Classical structure in Tuscan-Doric style. It is a long colonnaded structure open on all sides, measuring about 24m by 5m with a roof supported on 16 stone columns and eight timber columns or posts. (4)
