Roman Altars (Hexham)

[NY 935 640] In 1864 two Roman altars were found when the new street [Beaumont Street] from Market Place to Battle Hill was being formed. One is plain but the other is inscribed:-

Sited to the centre of Beaumont Street. (1)

They are now preserved at the west end of the nave of the Priory Church of St Andrew, Hexham. The uninscribed altar is very weathered and its base is missing. (2)

No change. (3)

The Apollo Maponus altar in Hexham Abbey is recorded in the national survey of Roman inscribed material with the number 1120. (4)
