Roman tombstones (Whittington)

[Previously recorded under NY 96 NE 2.2]

Area NY 997682. Roman cemetery (site). (1)

'The evidence for a cemetery at Haltonchesters consists in the group of three tombstones, now RIB 1433, 1435 and 1436, the findspots of which imply a cemetery a short distance south of the fort. It was because of them that I took steps to have the appropriate conventional sign put on the (Hadrian's Wall) map'. (2)

(Area NY 997678). RIB 1433. A fragment of a tombstone was seen about AD1600 at Halton Castle. Now at Trinity College, Cambridge.
RIB 1435, tombstone found before 1840 at, or near, Halton Chesters. Now in the Black Gate Museum, Newcastle.
RIB 1436. Fragment of tombstone found at Halton Castle in 1686 when lowering the stable yard. (See also NY 96 NE 20 for two Roman tombstones still at Halton Castle). (3)

Proposed area of a cemetery lies partly within scheduled monument 26046. (4)
