Spithope Burn settlement (Rochester and Byrness)

Probable medieval settlement found whilst felling trees. Sketch survey by Forestry Authority. (1)

NT 76550340. A well-preserved settlement consisting of at least two or three dwellings and two well-defined enclosures. The function of the two-row earthwork running north westward, away from the main complex, is unknown. There is a possibility of other structures to the west, but these are very fragmented. (2)

Some earthworks, including a couple of enclosures, are visible on lidar imagery. But it is not possible to say from this imagery alone whether the remains are medieval or later. (3)
