Gallowhill Farm Mesolithic site (Corbridge)

Mesolithic flint working site, away from the River Tyne. Gallowhill Farm yielded an unmixed collection of flints from shallow soil overlying sandstone. They included 14 cores, four core trimmings, three micro-burins, eight steep sided scrapers on chunky flakes, six short end scrapers, five notched blades and three possible microliths. Finds in Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle upon Tyne, accession no 1973.21. (1)

The line of the proposed Corbridge-Hexham bypass was walked by the Field Research Group of the Soc of Antiq of Newcastle in December 1973. A localised area of flint artifacts and waste was found in a field centred at NY 99806535 on Gallowhill Farm. The concentration was more closely located in the southern half of the field. Road works have only interfered with the northern half of the field. The area of flint finds was disturbed only by a water pipe to a new cattle trough. (2)
