Bronze Age burial (Corbridge)
In a field near Stagshaw Close House, the plough turned up in 1822, a prehistoric grave, described at the time as 'about 4 feet deep, 3 feet and 2-1/2 feet wide', cut in the native rock. It contained a small urn composed of clay and sand, uncovered and coarsely ornamented; a few ordinary sized teeth in perfect preservation, the remains of a skull, a small heart-shaped amulet of a grey slatey stone, perforated for suspension, and a tongue shaped piece of flint. (1)(2)
March 1822 'tongue-shaped' piece of flint probably an arrowhead. Find was made by a Mr Carr. (3)
No further information regarding the site of this burial. The information indicates that this was a Bronze Age inhumation. The present location of the grave goods was not ascertained. Greenwood's Map of Northumberland, 1828, shows that Stagshaw Close House, near which the burial was found, occupies the same site as the present Stagshaw House (NY 98476680). (4)
No further information other than the suggestive name Grave Hill, NY 991670, which is surrounded by arable fields and close to Stagshaw House. (5)
