Milecastle 24 (Wall Fell) (Wall)
[NY 9606 6925] Milecastle 24 [GSC] (Site of) [T.I.] (1)
In the north-east corner of the first field following the rough ground, 26yds west of the field wall on the south of the road, the platform of milecastle 24 may be quite distinctly observed. It was found in 1930 to be fifty feet wide internally, with side walls 10ft thick. (2)(3)
Published survey (25in) correct. The perimeter wall of the milecastle is extant as a turf covered bank 0.5m high, obscured, however, on the north east by quarry spoil. (4)
Scheduling revised on 14th July 1997, part of national monument number 26049. Milecastle 24 is situated just below the crest of a west facing slope with views to the north and south. It was partly excavated in 1930 by Hepple and was shown to be just over 15m across with walls 3m thick. It survives as a turf covered mound with the remains of the excavation trenches and spoil heap still visible. (5)
The side walls of the milecastle were built to the Broad Wall standard (between 3-2.74m wide). (6)
Remains of robber/excavation trenches and a large spoil heap, up to 1.2m high, were found on the site, but no real platform survives. The trenches are up to 0.3m deep and the platform scarp to the west is up to 0.4m high. The milecastle is possibly of the long axis type. NB The area was surveyed in high vegetation. (7a)
A Roman milecastle is visible as an earthwork on air photographs at NY 9606 6925. The feature is visible as a broad bank and an area of disturbance as described above. (7b)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7c)
Depiction from the James Irwin Coates archive (1879). (7d)
General association with HER 8645 (Turret 24a) and HER 8646 (Turret 24b). (7)
