This is the site of the shrunken medieval village of Warden. It was first recorded in 1296, when the village belonged to Hexham Priory. By 1666 there were at least fifteen houses in the village. However, a map of 1769 shows that the village had by then decreased in size. Until recently the settlement only contained a hall, a farm and a few cottages; the number of houses has now increased. There are no remains to be seen of the earlier, medieval, buildings.
