Burdhopecrag Hall (Rochester and Byrness)

Site of Burdhopecrag Hall, destroyed by fire in 1962. References for Burdhopecrag and Burdhope confused. Earliest recorded date and references, 1584 Report (Fraser); 1604 Survey (Sanderson); 1618 Rental; 1673-90 Elsdon Parish Registers; 1710+ Poll Books and Census returns; 1769 map; 1827 history of the hall by Hodsgon. (1)

Burdhopecraig Hall was accidentally burnt down on 22 August 1957 when in occupation by the 272 (N) Field Regiment, RA, TA. The remains of the hall were left until 1964 when the site was finally cleared. (2)

Earthworks visible on lidar imagery could be associated with the demolished Burdhopecrag Hall, though these do not seem to equate closely to the plan of the hall as shown on the OS 1st edition map. (3)
