The cemetery contains about 100 small barrows that survive as low circular mounds between 3m and 4m across. Some of the mounds have a ditch and bank around the outside. Most of the cemetery lies to the south of Dere Street Roman road but there are mounds on the north side of the road as well. In addition to these mounds there are four monumental tombs. Part of the cemetery was excavated in the 1970s and this revealed that each mound contained a central burial pit with cremated ashes inside; the burials included men women and children, probably from the nearby fort. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
