Kellyburn (Rochester and Byrness)
(NY 841 957) A small deserted medieval village visible on aerial photographs. Apparently unlisted. (1)
A small depopulation complex, consisting of seven definite building steadings with associated garths.
Steading 'A', at NY 8413 9575, is obviously later than the rest, with the walls forming its north west angle 0.6m thick and still standing to a height of 1.8m. This is probably the remains of 'Kellyburn' marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch.
Of the other steadings, three are represented by rectangular mounds of earth and stone up to 1.4m high, indicating buildings of considerable strength, while the remaining three are less well defined.
The remains, which are bounded by rig-and-furrow to the east and west, probably represent the site of a medieval hamlet and a later cottage. Surveyed at 6 inch scale. (2)
Additional reference. (3)
