Two stone hut circles west of Nether Houses (Rochester and Byrness)

NY 8213 9704. Discovered during field inspection, an unenclosed hut circle, 'A' 4m diameter internally and 6m externally, formed of large earthfast stones, some set on edge. It has an orthostatic entrance on the east side, and the interior is 0.3m below the surrounding area.
The feature is too small and too crude in construction to be a sheepfold, and may be an isolated hut associated with the Romano-British complex to the east (NY 89 NW 23, 24 and 25). See photograph. (1)

(NY 8210 9702) Visible on aerial photographs. (2)

About 100m to the south-east at NY 8218 9696 is a second hut 'B', measuring 8m in diameter between the centres of a turf-covered stone wall 1.6m wide and 0.2m high. A break in the bank in the east is probably the original entrance. Surveyed at 1:10,000. (3)

NY 8212 9703. Hut circle 850m W of Nether Houses. Scheduled RSM No 25094. The remains of a single unenclosed hut circle situated on a rocky outcrop above the Wind Burn. The hut circle is 4m in diameter within an outer wall 2m wide and 0.3m high. The wall is constructed of large stones, some set on edge. On the e side there is an entrance marked by two large stones set either side of a gap in the enclosing wall. (4)

Scheduled. (5)
