A rectangular Roman temporary camp was discovered by aerial photography in 1934. It was probably built here in the first century AD and, on a temporary basis, would have been large enough to accommodate groups of soldiers advancing northwards, as well as those carrying out routine maintenance. It measures 75m east to west by 220m north to south and is surrounded by a bank of earth with a ditch around the outside. These earthwork ramparts still stand 1.5m high above the bottom of the ditch. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
