Romano-British settlement and field of cord rig, 625m south west of Rede Bridge (Bellingham)
This settlement is Romano-British in date. It is sub-rectangular in shape, measures up to 50m by 57m in plan, and is defined by a bank and external ditch with a counterscarp bank. There is an entrance through the east side. Inside the settlement are two sunken areas, thought to be yards, with the foundations of at least four stone round houses facing onto them. Two of these houses and a yard were partly excavated in 1957. The settlement lies adjacent to an earlier prehistoric field which contains a series of narrow ridges, or cord rig, each about 1m wide. This is believed to be associated with an earlier phase of settlement in the area.
