Romano-British farmstead north-east of Sharpley (Simonburn)

In Sharpley Plantation [NY 823725] there is a rectangular earthwork with a single rampart. (1)

Listed as a 'Rectilinear 'Native' Settlement'. (2)

NY 88257259 Description correct. A small enclosure bounded by an earth and stone bank varying in height from 0.3m to 0.6m. The interior has been severely mutilated by surface quarrying. Two circular depressions (both with apparent entrances) may be the remains of hut circles. Probably a homestead, rather than settlement. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)

A group of rectilinear enclosures of probable Iron Age or Roman date were seen as earthworks and mapped from air photographs. The largest enclosure, lying at the west end of the group, measures approximately 55 m by 30 m and includes at least two probable hut circles towards the west end. Attached to the east end of the enclosure, is a second incompete enclosure approximately 40 m in length which has one division. (5a)
