Fold Hill enclosed settlement (Simonburn)

This is an enclosed settlement of Iron Age or Roman date. A modern sheepfold lies in the north-west corner of the enclosure. To the east is a large area of prehistoric cord rig. The enclosure is rectangular and is surrounded by a large earth bank with an entrance on the east side. (1)(2)(3)

Possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure visible as earthworks on air photographs taken in 1992 (NMR NY 8272/2 (TMG 13892/40) 18-MAY-1992), centred at NY 8211 7249. It lies on Fold Hill on Simonburn Common. The enclosure has internal divisions and an external enclosure abutting the north west side, which are possibly later additions, used in the medieval or post-medieval period for stock enclosures. A post-medieval circular stell has been placed inside the enclosure in the northwest corner. The enclosure lies adjacent to an extensive area of prehistoric cord rig. (4)(5)

General association with HER 32204 (cord rig). (5)
