Stublick Bog shaft mounds (Allendale; Haydon)
NY 838606 Stublick Bog shaft mounds. Core zone of an extended area of shallow coal workings that supplied Langley Smeltmill. The area comprises an irregular spread of shaft-mounds with evidence of gin circles and trackways. The workings date to the 18th century, or possibly earlier, and the last pit was worked in 1947. The site will provide important information about the organisation of Stublick Colliery. Many shaft-mound landscapes have been lost to opencast mining in the North East and this core zone of an upland coal working area is well-preserved and an integral part of the setting of Stublick Colliery and merits protection. Scheduling proposed in 1994 with maintenance of existing land-use and discouragement of drainage of shaft mounds. (1)
