Prudhamstone quarry (Warden)
This is a large and impressive sandstone quarry, which supplied building stone for construction in 19th century Newcastle. Surviving remains include huge revetments, crane bases and platforms, a bridge and lines of iron bars inserted into the working face. Much of the quarry is now beneath forestry. (1-5)
Post medieval/ 20th century quarrying visible as earthworks on air photographs taken in 1945. Centred at NY 885 687, this large area of limestone quarrying is also seemingly related to an adjacent tramway and lime kilns. Other, older quarries in the immediate vicinity imply that this is an old area of quarrying that has been exploited until the 20th century. (6a-b)
