Howden (Newbrough and Fourstones)

(NY 8351 6937) Camp. (1)

MacLauchlan notes 'the remains of a farmhouse surrounded by some banks which give the appearance of a camp', about four furlongs east of Grindon.
Hogg lists it under native sites, an 'irregular earthwork with single rampart'.
A farm yielding £4 rent existed here in 1581, and Jobey refers to the present remains as part of an extensive deserted medieval village. (2)(3)(4)(5)

There is no sign of an earthwork other than two strong baulks which are upcast from drainage ditches, and which partially 'enclose' the farmhouse at NY 8352 6934. The latter (surveyed at 1:2500) is reduced to a group of overgrown, rubble enclosures. It is set in a wide area of fragmentary field baulks, and derelict sheep-folds; but no coherent deserted medieval village pattern exists. (6)

Howden deserted medieval village. (7)

Medieval/post-medieval enclosures and boundary banks are visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at NY 8354 6933. A range of conjoined rectanguar enclosures lies on a north-east south-west alignment. An area to the north-west is enclosed by fragmentary banks. A further, detached curvilinear enclosure lies at NY 8355 6932. The features appear to be associated with a system of sod cast banks and ridge and furrow. (8)
