South-west of the Schoolhouse, ie Grindon School, are traces of some drifts from which the Romans have probably taken coal. (2)
The area shown in (1) is marshy ground surrounding Grindon Lough, and could not feasibly have been worked for coal at any period. Immediately south, however, a series of disused coal workings extend in a narrow band from NY 783669 to NY 814678. (3)
