Wooley bastle (Allendale)

Amongst the triangular arrangement of farm buildings at Wooley is a bastle. Most of the walls are unusually thin walls (0.65 to 0.8m thick) with the exception of the east end which is 1.5m thick. The bastle was altered in the 18th century to become a house and some of the original openings were blocked up. It is part of a triangular arrangement of buildings around a yard that include Wooley north range and Wooley Farmhouse that are probably the most important group of early buildings in Allendale. Documentary evidence can be traced back to 1608 when they commanded the highest rent in East Allendale. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law.
